HOW IT ALL BEGAN
The playground and sports field has been located in the heart of Walberberg for many decades. Its greatest asset is the mature trees, which provide natural shade for the children. Especially in times of increasingly hot summers, such an established, sheltered place is invaluable.
However, for many years, little had happened beyond occasional maintenance. The area increasingly deteriorated. Play equipment was damaged, the sand was contaminated, and many areas were completely neglected. Even syringes and drug paraphernalia were found. There were hardly any safe and attractive play options left for children.
From this condition, the idea arose in 2017 to completely redesign the playground together with the city, many companies, donors, and numerous helping hands. What was achieved in Walberberg back then is also documented in the WDR report with an interview with Michael Landsberg. Just three sections above, you can find the pictures, films, and detailed information about this first major community effort.
Nine years later, the next chapter begins. Walberberg Children’s Playground aims to preserve what has been achieved with a 2.0 initiative, tackle necessary work, and carefully develop the space further for children, teenagers, and all generations.
Now, the Walberberg multi-generational playground has visibly aged and needs a thorough refresh.
Therefore, the first cleaning work will start on September 1st. This will be followed by maintenance, repairs, and further planning for an exercise park for teenagers and adults. The city supports the project and may temporarily close the playground for necessary work. However, such a project requires many helping hands, expertise, materials, and people who work together.

Together, we will bring Walberberg Children’s Playground up to 2.0 standards.
AN IDEA FOR ALL GENERATIONS
The redesign in 2017 created a versatile playground for children under three years old up to about 14 years old. The offerings were supplemented by two table tennis tables and a youth corner with four seats and a table.
Despite all the enthusiasm, there was a valid point of criticism at the time: comparatively little was created for older teenagers.
This is exactly where the new idea comes in. A small calisthenics exercise park could be created on the area of one of the two table tennis tables. A freely accessible training area for teenagers, adults, and seniors. This would develop the children’s playground into a true exercise hub for all age groups.
WHAT THE EXERCISE PARK COULD LOOK LIKE
The 3D clip shows how the potential calisthenics exercise park is built step by step. It features the exact equipment selected for the current design. This provides a first impression of what the park might look like and how it could be arranged on the available space.
Important: The video shows an initial plan and not yet a final construction design. Positions, distances, and individual details may still change during the process.
The fundamental idea of a small exercise park at this location has already been discussed with Mayor Christian Mandt and explicitly endorsed by him. The clip visualizes what could emerge from this for Walberberg.
TAILWIND FOR WALBERBERG
In conversation with Bornheim’s Mayor Christian Mandt, the crucial questions are addressed: How does he evaluate the project? Is the planned exercise park realistic? Does the city support the idea and will it assist us?
His answers are encouraging. The exercise park is not a fleeting idea, but a project with a real chance of implementation. The city is positive about the planning and ready to accompany the further journey.
Now it’s up to us. We are looking for people from Walberberg and the entire Bornheim Vorgebirge region who want to contribute ideas, help out, and lend a hand. With time, expertise, materials, contacts, or financial support.
When the city and citizens act together, a good idea can create something lasting for young people and all generations.

A lot is happening right now around Walberberg Children’s Playground 2.0. The area is to be cleaned, maintained, and made beautiful again in many places. At the same time, new ideas are emerging on how we can further develop it for children, teenagers, and all generations.

A very effective team is already in place. Nevertheless, we need more helpers, because the project is bigger than it appears at first glance. It’s not a mammoth project like in 2017, but significantly more than a small cleaning operation on an afternoon.
No one needs to be a skilled craftsman. You can help with labor, expertise, materials, tools, contacts, organization, or simply with a few hours of your time. Every helping hand counts. 🤝
Those who actively participate should also receive visible recognition. In the end, a permanent plaque will commemorate the people who made this project possible together.
